  1. Working Experience with dates:

Dr. R. J. Tanko started his working carreer as Animal Husbandry Officer, Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural resources in 1982 where he worked at the Mutton Improvement Centre Katsina and the Sheep Improvement Center Kukar Aljana, in Dutsin before joining the National Animal Production Research Institute in the year 1983 as a Graduate Assistant on rangeland management and forage agronomy in the Feed and Nutrition Research Programme (formerly Department of Forage Agronomy) and have remained there to date carrying out research in rangeland management, forage agronomy, crop-livestock integration and evaluation of feed resources in the livestock sector. He has been involved in both International national research projects with organizations like the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Australia, National Livestock Projects Department. In addition  to carrying out research in the area of range improvement/management and forage agronomy,  he is also engaged in teaching and supervision of students at HND, Undergraduate and Post Graduate levels  in the Samaru College  of Agriculture, College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Mando Kaduna and the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture ABU, Zaria.

A collaborative project between International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, (IITA), Ibadan, The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U. Leuven, Belgium and several West African National Agricultural Research Systems (2004-2006).

  • Member of Research Team: Introduction of forage into the farming systems for improved livestock production in the Savanna areas of Northern Nigeria. A collaborative research project between National Livestock Projects Division (NLPD), The National Animal Production Research Institute, (NAPRI), The Institute for Agricultural Research, (IAR), National Agricultural Extension and Liaison Services, (NAERL), Agricultural Development Projects, (ADPs) and States Pilot Livestock Development Projects (1994 – 2000)
  1. Member of Research Team: Intensification of Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems in the Dry Savannas of West Africa. A sub- regional research project led by International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) / International Livestock Research Institute ILRI, Ibadan covering Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali (2003-2006).
