Since the arguments and counter-arguments against the introduction and acceptability of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) of rage, scientists and research centers have approved their use by Nigerian farmers to increase agricultural productivity and ensure food security in the country.
The confirmation came a year after the largest scientific body, the Nigerian Academy of Sciences, called on the government to introduce technology in all areas to ensure its adoption.
They called for the third South-West Agro-Ecological Forum on Biosecurity at Obafemi Avolovo University (OAU), Ile Ife, stating that the government’s action was overdue and now it’s better than never.
For them, technology has remained one of the most viable options for a country to strengthen its food safety strategies, as well as to provide healthy food for its growing population.
“Since the government created the National Agency for the Development of Biotechnology and the National Agency for Biosecurity Management, this will allow technology to take root here,” they added.
Professor Eyoptop Ogunbodede, vice-chancellor of the OAU, said that the government’s plan to change the position of agriculture as the basis of the economy would be achieved if traditional methods could give way to modern technologies. This has the potential to increase productivity, he argued, while conventional agriculture has led to food insecurity, hunger, malnutrition and poverty in the country.
“It is necessary to provide scientists and scientific evidence with evidence that GM foods are safe, like any other food from conventional sources. The use of biotechnology should continue here, ”he suggested.
Another university don, Professor Bimelle Solomon, argued that given the problems of climate change, persistent harmful pests, reducing the quality of nutrients in the soil and reducing the use of arable land, the use of technology and science is inevitable. ” This is an important tool that can help Nigeria achieve food security, industrial growth, improved health and environmental sustainability. The technique can be used for genetic / reproduction. ”
Professor D.J. Oydele explained that he can increase agricultural productivity; distract the sector from dependence on input chemicals and reduce environmental problems. In turn, Dr. Ogundare argued that Nigeria should withdraw from the political campaign with the participation of the GMOs and focus more on scientific information, supported by evidence. “We are currently facing the problems of hunger and food shortages. So, all hands should be on deck to think about the most appropriate strategy that would make safe and healthy food available to Nigeria. ”
