JDPC, ActionAid urge Ondo to tackle agric challenges

Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu

The Justice and Peace Development Center (JDPC) and ActionAid Nigeria identified some problems in the agricultural sector, revealing that they represent barriers to farmers in the Ondo state.

At a one-day advisory meeting on the state budget of agriculture Ondo in 2019 in Akura on Tuesday, organizations were interested in broader participation, especially among small-scale women farmers.

The chairman of the JDPC, the Committee on Public Finance in Agriculture for the Budget (PFA), the head of Piay Akomolafe, said that it is necessary to facilitate the contribution of citizens to the 2019 agricultural budget.

According to him, this will create the ownership, alignment and integration of programs that will help achieve food security and wealth creation in Ondo.

He lamented that some problems still slow the growth of the sector.

Such problems include a poor road network, insufficient funding and a shortage of land to participate in extensive commercial agriculture.

Others are the insecurity of farmers due to the invasion by Fulani herdsmen, the lack of synergy between players in the value chain, the non-regulation of agricultural policies and bottlenecks for access to credit

"The process of harvesting funds for fertilization is complex.

It is known that agriculture is seasonal, therefore, when funds are not released on time, it may not be possible to achieve the desired goals, which will result in the fact that such funds will be redirected later.

"Overtime has reduced the number of employees involved in the extension, visiting rural communities to update and hire farmers in their farming activities," he added.
