Stakeholders at a conference in Abuja on Tuesday called on the federal government to immediately establish a Conflict and Conflict Resolution Commission to address the lingering crisis of shepherd farmers in the country.
They also urged the government to increase security measures so that both farmers and shepherds feel safe.
However, they stated that the proposal for pastures should be accepted, starting with the agreeing states.
The recommendations are contained in a communique of a two-day conference organized by The Nation Newspapers and TV Continental (TVC) in Abuja.
A session in which representatives of farmers' groups, pastoralists and herders, traditional rulers, state governments, security agencies and members of the diplomatic community participate, among other things, also want to revitalize the river basin authorities.
The communique read by Dr. Kayode Samuel said: “The summit was conceived as an open forum to promote a frank exchange of ideas on topical issues of national and international interest, with particular reference to the clashes of shepherds and farmers throughout the country, with a view to finding effective and durable solutions.
“The government should create a Federal Commission for Conflict and Conflict Resolution.
"It is necessary to strengthen security measures so that both farmers and sheep feel safe and isolated criminal elements."
According to the communique, the three participants of the main speech prof. Biodun Adeliy, Professor N. A. Gvorgor and Dr. Eustace Iyai emphasized in their views the need to change nomadism in favor of practitioners and advised that the nomad should combine processing with nomadicism, producing crops such as corn, on which the herd should be raised.
