Agriculture has become the saving grace of Nigeria’s economic misfortune, but to achieve great value in this sector, we must fully develop the agriculture value chain.

Farming alone cannot do the magic; we must diversify into agro industries like processing plants, transportation, packaging and logistics to create more economic value and more job opportunities. To achieve these, women’s role should be a priority in key positions where decisions are made in agriculture and industries.

Women play a very significant role in agriculture. Statistics have shown that farming and food processing in Nigeria/Africa is dominated by rural women and sold in the rural market. The role of women in agriculture is vital in our society but yet their level of poverty still remains high. They lack financial power to provide most of their basic needs.

Agriculture in Nigeria constitutes most of illiterate female population who do not have the power to partake in the decision making process of agriculture as Nigeria’s next vehicle of economic growth.

Women also should realize the unique power bestowed on them by God. They maintain a high level of trustworthiness when it comes to handling responsibilities and performing tasks. They are formidable and always bring into play their femininity in business or any
position they hold.

They have tenacity and sustainability and can strive to get things done even in the most difficult circumstances. ”Women are pivotal to affecting change in their world” michelle mckinney harmond.

Therefore, agriculture in Nigeria will not sustain growth and develop the economy if the role of the woman is not considered as key in the scheme of things. A lot of women groups and NGOs are springing up by the day to share, mentor, and train women to go into agriculture, the government has also created incubation centers and training facilities to create a soft landing ground for startups.

So, it’s only wise for young women to take advantage of these opportunities. Influx of women in Agriculture will contribute highly and facilitate the growth and sustainability that the economy needs.

With more young educated women farming, jobs will be created and Nigeria will have products competing highly in the international market.
