The police in Jigawa deployed a detachment of shock groups to stop even more destruction of agricultural land in the area of the local government of Kirikasamm in the state of nomadic shepherds.
Police spokesman Jigawa SP Abdu Zingiri told Nigeria News Agency on Tuesday that state police commissioner Bala Senchi had mobilized a “huge number” of mobile police officers and deployed them in the area to protect lives and property.
“Even before they began to destroy agricultural land, we received a survey report that thousands of shepherds were gathered in the area, who reported deployment,” he explained.
The deputy chairman of the council, Alasan Matafari, was previously worried about the invasion of shepherds in the area.
He claimed that more than 500 agricultural land was on the verge of destruction by shepherds if nothing was done to prevent danger.
Matafari said that about 1,000 shepherds armed with sticks and machetes pushed their animals to pasture on agricultural land in the area and are currently moving west to the neighboring area of the Guri Council.
“When we say, nomadic shepherds who passed through the northern axis of Bauchi, gathered on the border between Kirikasamma and Guri LGA and began to cross Kirikasamu.
“Every year they gather for grazing in the Zagari forest in Guri during the rainy season, but after that it happens on our territory, which always led to the destruction of agricultural land and violence.
“Last year, they lost their lives in confrontation between farmers and these armed shepherds in Marma and Madachi.
“That's why we always advised them to go over the shoulders of the highway where there are no agricultural land, but they refused to listen,” he complains.
A resident of Aliya Mackam, who is also the chairman of the Association of Fruit Sellers in the area, told NAS that shepherds were chasing a farmer from the Armaz Almaji Abb Marma in Marma, from his farm, and fed their cattle with fruits.
“They already started feeding their livestock with watermelons even before they were chased.
“There were over 5,000 watermelons on the farm before he left.
“We found ourselves in a terrible situation when we are unable to harvest and harvest because of the activities of the shepherds.
“Therefore, we urge the state and federal governments to urgently delve into this issue in order to stop these armed shepherds from further destroying our cultures,” he said.
