The National Deputy President of the Nigerian Rice Farmers Association, Mr. Segun Ato, advised parents to encourage their children to farm.
Speaking in a one-day training program on rice production and application of materials organized by the association in Badagri, Lagos, Ato said that parents should change their attitude towards agriculture and encourage their children to agriculture.
According to him, "we can not continue to import rice and other products; Nigerians can feed themselves without the help of other countries.
Ato lamented that it's so unfortunate that many young people are still looking for a white collar job that is no longer available to them.
He went on to say: "Agriculture should be seen as a business, not as a hobby. In Nigeria, about 95 million hectares of agricultural land, and 6 million of this land are suitable for growing rice, which makes the agricultural sector large enough to accommodate a large number of people who are ready for the farm. "
He noted that this association is part of the program to support borrowers of the federal government, which makes the fund affordable for farmers in the country.
According to him, they do not give money to anyone, but investors get support for their producers.
Ato further explained: "The federal government dropped its weight for farmers to grow rice in finance and resources. Now our farmers are taught modern rice farming for obtaining high yield and production, so we can feed the nation with rice. "
