The President of International Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) Association of Nigeria, Dr. James Marsh, has task food establishments’ owners and workers in the country on what to do to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
The food safety expert advised that establishments should ensure that infected workers do not handle food and that staff should not work if they have any of the symptoms of COVID-19. Marsh, who is also the Managing Director of HACCP Academy Nigeria, said that avoidance and basic food safety guidelines should be strictly enforced.
“In the wake of the current COVID-19 virus outbreak and response measures being implemented globally, HACCP Academy Nigeria felt it was important to do our part in supporting the food industry.
“We hope we can provide appropriate and practical guidance for you to consider helping to protect our food and ensure business continuity,” he said. According to him, basic food safety guidelines which should be strictly enforced include, reinforcing good hygiene practices that are already in place and also educating employees about the risks of the virus, and how it can spread, which is by touching the face, sneezing, coughing, and hand contact.
He also emphasised the importance of controlling sneezes or companies could instruct employees to wear face covering, as he said that masks may be useful, or even a tight-mesh beard net can limit spittle from spreading) He further noted that food establishments must encourage more frequent hand washing and making additional hand sanitizer stations available and that disposable gloves should be used appropriately.
Speaking further he stated that it is crucial at this time that all Nigerians do what they can do to protect the food products and companies, through sharing and implementing best practises. “It’s crucial at this time that we all do what we can to protect our food products and companies, through sharing and implementing best practices,” he said.
