CONTINUED Conflicts and climate-related shocks are due to food insecurity, especially in the countries of the south, the Middle East and East Africa.
In a recently published report, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stressed that long-term conflicts, severe weather events and displacement continue to threaten food access for millions of people.
"Civil conflicts and population displacement remain key factors in the lack of food security in East Africa and the Middle East, while conditions of dry weather reduce grain production in South Africa," the statement said.
Because of the ongoing conflict in Yemen, about 17.8 million people are food insecure and require urgent humanitarian assistance, which is five percent more than in 2017.
