Sheep
Uda has a convex face; long, large legs; and long, large and pendulous earlobes. Uda rams have horns and these horns become wide, large and spiral as the sheep grow older. Uda ewes don’t have horns.
An adult Uda ram could weigh about 35 – 60 kg while an adult Uda ewe weighs about 30 – 45 kg. The breed is adapted to an extensive type of grazing. Like the Balami breed, Uda sheep can survive in any dry and hot environment. However, they have a low survival rate outside their ecological zone.
Ruminant animals’ productivity in Nigeria is low. Livestock slaughtered are generally old and produced over a period with a variable nutritional history yielding tougher meat than desirable.
Currently, nutrition is so poor that feed finishers only invest in mature animals. Much of the local feed finishing enterprise activity is of poor quality and only remains viable because of the high price of meat.
Professional butchers in towns such as Kano,Kaduna,Abuja,Lagos,Enugu and other cities are unwilling to buy village livestock because of the poor meat quality, and source grass-fed animals from more remote areas.
Red meat sector stakeholders ranked the lack of quality feed finished animals as the greatest of 15 constraints to industry competitiveness.
Feeding
Feeding with the modern feed finishing techniques which enables a farmer to feed-finished small ruminants that are about five to six months maturity within 60 – 90days, while large ruminants is between ten to twelve months within 90 – 120 days.
There Two Types Of Feeding You Can Apply:
• Feeding with Finished feed: When feeding with finished feed such as Formulated finished feed or branded finished feed (rico gado) you are expected to feed the goats with 1kg of the feed every day with the choice of your feed (finished feed such as Formulated finished feed or branded finished feed (rico gado) Make sure there is water for them to drink.
• Feeding with roughage: you can feed them on leaves, cut grasses for them; they feed well on kitchen waste like cassava peelings, plantain peelings, maize husk, maize bran or chaff.
They can as well graze but in this case must be monitored very well. Add very little table salt to the water it triggers their appetite and makes them eat more.
