The federal government and the African Development Bank have launched a compact technology for African agricultural transformation (TAAT) program for the wheat value chain in Nigeria.
TAAT is an integral part of the Feed Control Strategy and the three-year (2018-2020) program, which will be implemented in seven separate African countries – Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Mali and Zimbabwe.
Speaking at a seminar held at the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria in Abuja, Dr K.W Gvadi, Executive Director of the Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI), said that the program focuses on the country's current commitment to wheat self-sufficiency.
He said that the program will expand wheat technology and introduce advanced methods that will allow farmers to increase yields from the current 3.0 t / ha to 5-6 t / ha.
“The import of wheat still carries a huge economic burden on Nigeria, while consumption is growing and leads to the fact that national emissions are insignificant.
“The current consumption of wheat in the country is 4.2 million tons, and Nigeria spends more than 4.3 million dollars on imports annually. US, but national production is only 350,000 metric tons, ”he said.
He noted that cooperation with other partners, such as the SARD-SC project funded by AFDB, ICARDA and AFDB, led to the release of six new wheat varieties with a yield of 5 to 6 tons per hectare.
In an interview Daily trustTAAT Wheat Coordinator, Dr. Solomon Assefa, said that all stakeholders should work as a team to ensure a market for farmers.
“African countries are spending billions of Naira on wheat imports, including Nigeria, so the introduction of technology will create opportunities for farmers and, in turn, will increase productivity, as this country is growing rapidly,” he added.
