The National Leader of the Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said that the shepherds / farmers crisis was caused not by religious or political differences, but by the lack of water.

Speaking at a peaceful forum, the former governor of Lagos asked the government to immediately transfer unused land to pastures, as this would curb the ongoing clashes between farmers and shepherds.

Tinubu, who was introduced by the executive commissioner for the Nigerian Communications Commission, said on Sunday Dare: “The government should help the shepherds gradually move from traditional nomadic existence to a more static lifestyle.

“We have to face the reality that modernity makes the nomadic way counterproductive and inefficient.

“Unoccupied, isolated lands can quickly turn into pastures in the affected states. In the end, this will allow the shepherds to better support their livestock and, consequently, their own livelihood. "

Water scarcity

Tinubu explained that desertification in most parts of the North led to the shepherds moving south with their cattle in search of more green pastures.

“A strongly thirsty person does not remember the Bible or the Koran very well until his thirst disappears. The need for fear often causes a person to behave as if deprived of compassion for a person in equally difficult circumstances.

“Without a doubt, the problem has worsened over the past decade. We must recognize that climate change plays a role, ”he added.
